A San Francisco based research lab, called OpenAI, has been a keen interest of Microsoft in recent times. Why? Microsoft has invested $1 billion in OpenAI so as to collaborate with the company and have the right to use the technology of the research lab.
OpenAI was founded by Silicon Valley luminaries which include Elon Musk and Sam Altman, which is known to be a devotee of artificial general intelligence (AGI). Through this investment, Microsoft would have a license to use some of the technology of the lab which can be fruitful for the company and the lab too. This collaboration has the potential to stabilize itself in the field of artificial intelligence and set the benchmark for the rest.
Artificial intelligence is the future of technology. Through artificial intelligence, mankind can have a lot of benefits. This type of technology is not new in the field. It came into existence in the early 2000s but no stable methods or techniques were available for experimenting in the field. OpenAI is one such lab which has dedicated itself completely to this field and is well known for its technology.
It is a non-profit research lab and was designed with the purpose of matching with the Research and Development techniques of companies such as Google and Amazon along with focusing on AI. Being a non-profit organization, the lab needed funding to continue with its research due to which it sought for outside investment. This is where Microsoft came into view. The company gave fund in order to keep the lab going and help in the development of AI and AGI.
The researchers all over the world are right now only capable of creating AI software like superhuman domains but when it comes to AGI, till date no one has been able to create something from this software. Meanwhile, OpenAI has said in its terms and conditions that in the future, the investor would get 100 times of the investment. This clearly states that the lab won’t offer “all future value” to the investors, to which Microsoft has agreed.
OpenAI has been known for setting up benchmarks and certain standards for all its rivals with robot dexterity and various other achievements.
The CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella said that the partnership would prioritize “AI safety front and center” through which “everyone can benefit”. On the other hand, Altman said “The creation of AGI will be the most important technological development in human history, with the potential to shape the trajectory of humanity. Our mission is to ensure that AGI technology benefits all of humanity, and we’re working with Microsoft to build the supercomputing foundation on which we’ll build AGI.”
Meanwhile, there has been an update about the investment that Microsoft has been making in OpenAI. According to reliable sources, Microsoft has made a cash investment and OpenAI is planning to spend the investment in less than 5 years in the process of improving AI and researching and experimenting on AGI.
